As the sweetness of summer faded into the tartness of fall and the crisp night of winter, I felt a need to reflect. This past year I watched the days fly swiftly by me. They were full of love, laughter, hard work, and fearless honesty: loss and rebirth. I am reminded of Cat Stevens’ song “Time Passages” – the years run too short and the days too fast. This poetic description of the seasons passing quickly through our lives hints at the awareness of the transient nature of our existence. Autumn and, eventually, winter brings a period of inward self-reflection.
HOPEFULLY, when I study myself and my reactions to the world, I become a better, more evolved human being. I live a richer, more meaningful life. Remaining still while the world moves around us allows the opportunity to see what is most important. For me, 2021 was about forgiveness, gratitude, and taking responsibility…for what has passed and what is just around the bend. Looking forward, there is always an energy in the air the first couple weeks of January. Everywhere you look, inspirational messages remind you that anything is possible. Now we enter that long-ass haul from late January to the first few daffodils and crocuses popping through the melting snow. Finally, spring becomes summer, which fades into fall. The nights get long, and I eventually find myself telling the people I love “happy new year,” and with a little more snow on my roof, I pound out another reflection on the keyboard. And so it goes…the years run too short and the days too fast.
